What is a Test Report Form (TRF)?

The IELTS Test Report Form is a mark sheet containing your scores for individual sections of IELTS and your overall score. Each candidate gets one IELTS TRF.

Universities accept this official documentation of your scores during admission as proof of English language proficiency, as do employers during recruitment. IELTS TRF is valid for 2 years from the date of the exam.

An IELTS TRF contains your details, such as your name, date of birth, nationality and a photograph.

How to Calculate Your IELTS Results?

The final band score of IELTS is an average of the band score received individually in the 4 sections, ie. Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking.

You are marked on a band scale of 0 to 9 based on your proficiency in each section. Each section carries an equal weight. The scores are usually given in both half and full bands, which means you can score in the range of 5.0, 6.0 etc, as well as 5.5, 6.5 etc.

If the average comes out in a decimal point, for instance, 6.25, the bands are adjusted to the nearest band score. In this case, the final band score will be 6.5.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Q: What is the minimum IELTS Score?

A: There is no such thing as a minimum score for IELTS. Each university has its own selection criteria. Every university and country has their own requirements for the IELTS score to be eligible for admission. Therefore, it is advised to target the highest band scores to get admission to your desired university.

  • Q: How to send my IELTS Scores to universities?

A: IELTS sends 5 copies of your TRF to universities on your behalf, free of cost. You can select these universities/colleges during the registration.

If you have more copies of ATRFs, you will have to pay an additional fee of INR 250 per university.

Here’s how you can do that:
Visit the official IELTS IDP website and log into your IDP account
    Select the “ADD TRF” option
Select the universities you wish to send your scores to
    Choose the mode of delivery
    Pay the administrative fee

You can apply for a maximum of five ATRFs per day.

  • Q: Is there a separate charge for the Additional Score Report?

A: If you require more copies that must be sent to various universities, then they have to fill out the Additional Score Report TRF. If you have more copies of ATRFs, you will have to pay an additional fee of INR 250 per university. You can apply for a maximum of five ATRFs per day.

  • Q: In How many days is the IELTS result declared?

A: IELTS results are typically available online 13 days after the test date for the paper-based IELTS exam and 3-5 days for the Computer-delivered IELTS exam. For paper-based exams, you will receive a physical copy of your Test Report Form (TRF) by mail. It’s important to keep in mind that the delivery time may vary depending on your location and local postal services.

  • Q: How are IELTS results scored?

A: IELTS results are scored on a 9-band scale. Each section of the test (Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking) is individually assessed and assigned a score ranging from 0 to 9. The overall band score is then calculated by averaging the scores from the four sections. For example, if you score 7 in Listening, 8 in Reading, 7.5 in Writing, and 8 in Speaking, your overall band score would be (7 + 8 + 7.5 + 8) / 4 = 7.625, which is rounded up to 7.5.

  • Q: What is the validity period of IELTS results?

A: IELTS results are valid for two years from the date of the test. After this period, your scores expire, and you will need to retake the exam if you wish to provide recent IELTS results for any official purposes, such as university applications or visa requirements.

  • Q: How can I preview my IELTS results online?

A: To preview your IELTS results online, you need to visit the official IELTS website and log into the candidate portal. Once logged in, you will be able to view your scores and see a detailed breakdown of your performance in each section.

  • Q: Can I request a reevaluation of my IELTS scores?

A: Yes, if you are not satisfied with your IELTS scores, you can request an Enquiry on Results (EOR) within six weeks of your test date. During an EOR, your test will be re-marked by experienced examiners who have no knowledge of your original scores. If your scores change as a result of the re-marking, you will receive a new Test Report Form with the updated scores.

  • Q: How long does it take to receive the results of an Enquiry on Results?

A: The result of an Enquiry on Results usually takes around 2 to 21 days from the date the request is received by the test centre. The timeframe may vary depending on the number of sections requested for re-marking and the specific circumstances of each case.

  • Q: Can I use my IELTS scores for immigration purposes?

A: Absolutely! IELTS scores are widely accepted by immigration authorities in English-speaking countries as proof of language proficiency for visa and immigration applications. Whether you’re applying for permanent residency, a work visa, or citizenship, your IELTS results can play a crucial role in the assessment process.

  • Q: Can I send my IELTS results to multiple institutions?

A: Yes, you can request additional Test Report Forms (ATRFs) to be sent to multiple institutions or organizations. It’s essential to specify the institutions you want the scores to be sent to during your registration or inform the test centre before or on the test day. Some institutions may accept electronic TRFs sent directly by the test centre, while others may require physical copies. Make sure to check with the institutions you’re applying to for their specific score submission preferences.
